Brooklyn Film Camera

About

We started this project back in 2015 because there was nothing quite like it here in New York City much less anywhere else in the country. Film photography was an artform that had largely been forgotten amidst the digital revolution of homogenized cameras packed with silicon and circuitry that all looked and felt the same. In a world of pixel-perfect images, people almost forgot that beauty often lies in the uniqueness of each frame, in the clicks and clacks and whirrs of mechanical cameras, in the act of slowing down in an increasingly fast-paced world, and in the care and patience of the analog photographic process. We felt that there was a need for a project that centered itself around all things film. It was within our hearts. It was a dream that needed to be born. Since opening our doors all those years ago, Brooklyn Film Camera has become a shop and community space that meets the needs of photographers at both professional and amateur levels alike. Our Bushwick space is home to the NYC film photography community, regularly hosting workshops, classes, critiques, screenings, gatherings, events, and more. As long time film enthusiasts, and former employees and camera technicians of The Impossible Project (now known as Polaroid), we have an expert knowledge of all things Polaroid and a love for analog cameras across the board. We embrace and celebrate the strange, surprising, soft and squishy soul of film photography and hope you do too!
